Recall Alert: Mitsubishi Outlander, Outlander PHEV - Kelley Blue Book (4)Mitsubishi has issued a recall order for about 90,000 Outlander SUVs from model years 2022 and 2023 and Outlander Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV) SUVs from model year 2023 because their backup cameras can fail.

In documents filed with federal safety regulators, the company says a software error can cause the screen image to go black after six seconds of reversing under certain conditions. Suddenly losing the image while backing up “could increase the risk of a crash or an injury to a person behind the vehicle.”

The company says it hasn’t received reports of any injuries related to the problem. But it knows of “4 field reports and 2 potential warranty claims.”

Dealers will fix the problem with a free software update. Since these vehicles can’t receive over-the-air updates, owners will have to bring them in for repair. But software updates are among the quickest service appointments.

Manufacturers attempt to contact every owner but don’t always reach them all to address recall issues. Find out if your car has ever been recalled at our recall center.
