What is your DSL backup?

I was curious I've had DSL for 3 months and love it and rarely had a outage. I still have my dial-up but see no more reason to pay for it. I recently found out Amex has free ISP for their cardholders and wanted to go this route but something in their agreement rubbed me the wrong way.

"To maximize the services that American Express Online can provide You, we may also collect information regarding software programs, utilities or other materials that may reside in Your computer. However, we will not disclose to third parties such personal information as Your name, address, telephone number, credit card numbers or e-mail addresses unless You specifically authorize us to or unless we are required by law to do so."

Can everyone list their experiances with Free ISP. The pros and cons, BTW I have read about Juno and am dissapointed, I used to use them back when they started, got a disk (not disc) from Blockbuster and thought it was great, but now Im am not going near them.
Thanks

I have an alternate, but that's because I use EarthLink, and I have 20 free hours of dialup with them. If I need more, I can use my SMC account (college). If that isn't working, I can use my Aunt's free AOL account (it came with her gateway portable, she has DSL too). If her's is out, she uses GTE dialup, or AOL, or a no ads free ISP that exists in Washington, Oregon, , New York, and Puerto Rico called »www.nocharge.com/ . A lot of DSL accounts have some free dialup usage included.

Thanks mballard, Im with telocity and they have 60mins of dial-up in case they have a outage but I would feel better having a just in case back-up Im pretty sure I would use more than 60 mins. Do you think there would be a workaround to the AMEX snooping on my computer or is this the "norm" for free ISPs? I know they ask tons of ques. so they can bombard you with the proper ads.

I keep my dialup. It's a small expense and I have needed it a couple of times. Plus I've really become attached to my e-mail address and so have friends, family and acquaintances.

I have DSL through Southwestern Bell. They are also my ISP. It was a package deal for a single monthly price. They offered me (at sign-up) dial-up access at no additional charge. This is my DSL backup and it comes with my DSL service.

I get unlimited free dial up with Bell South. Although with the amount of time that it goes down you really need it.

you might be able to defeat AMEX's snooping if you use your firewall when you dial-up.

Just a thought

I guess I'm very lucky because I've had BellSouth since October and have had one outage and that was because of system maintenance at about 6 in the morning so it didn't bother me. I'm pretty sure I have a dialup account with BellSouth in case of an extended outage though.

The computer, monitor, and DSL modem are on a 1250VA UPS. I have a 3KW Coleman generator for extended power outages. Like others in the SBC family, I have unlimited dial-up included with the DSL. I have NetZero if both PBI is down both DSL and dial-up.

Verizon gives 150 hours of free dialup with their DSL connection, and with the amount of service bumps i've been hit with the last month, i could've used some of them up.

if that ever fails, i always have my university dial-up number, then my AOL account, and my favorite - »www.metconnect.com in the NYC metro area, you get free 56k dialup access with no additional software required.

then again, i really cant exercise any of these options since i gave my friend my 56k modem as soon as my dsl connection went active. i do have an old 28.8 ISA modem from US Robotics though...

once in a blue moon it's actually faster than my dsl connection What is your DSL backup? - Open Forum (27) imagine that as a sales pitch.

I think I'll try that, I got the firewall up. I wonder if it would disconnect me though if i deny it permission, ehh I'll do it anyway. Personally I would rather have little ads than them looking though my computer.

Same here, that was the only reason I have kept my org. Dial-up so I wouldnt have to tell everyone of my new email, etc etc. Plus lets be honest Telocity email hasnt been the best though I do give them credit it has been improving, whats funny the first email I have gotten in my mailbox from telocity, was the letter of apology.
Heh
