In the United States, the total financial assets held by U.S. commercial banking institutions increased year-on-year from 1990 to 2021, except in 2009 when a slight decline was observed. In 2021, commercial banking institutions held approximately 22.74 trillion U.S. dollars in total assets - an increase of about 2 trillion U.S. dollars from the previous year. At the beginning of the time period under observation, the financial assets held by U.S. commercial banking institutions amounted to a value of around 3.3 trillion U.S. dollars, so there has been an overall increase of more than 19 trillion U.S. dollars since then.
