Frequent flyers often turn to travel credit cards to save some cash or get a bit of extra comfort while on the go. If you’re loyal to a specific hotel or airline, you can usually get the best rewards and perks by signing up for its respective co-branded card.

JetBlue, the Long Island-based airline, offers two personal credit cards for its fans to choose from. If you’re a frequent traveler on JetBlue, it can be difficult to choose between the JetBlue Card* and the JetBlue Plus Card*, so it’s important to take the time to consider each card’s unique offerings.

Perks

  • Earn toward JetBlue Mosaic status with every purchase
  • Receive a 50% savings on eligible inflight food and beverage purchases on JetBlue-operated flights
  • Get a free checked bag for you and up to three companions when you use your card to purchase tickets on JetBlue-operated flights
  • Get 10% of your points back after redeeming for travel on a JetBlue-operated flight
  • Earn a $100 statement credit after purchasing a JetBlue Vacations package of $100 or more up to once per calendar year
  • Earn toward JetBlue Mosaic status with every purchase
  • Receive a 50% savings on eligible inflight food and beverage purchases on JetBlue-operated flights

Welcome Bonus

Both cards offer a welcome bonus, and one is clearly better than the other.

The fee-free JetBlue Card* offers a bonus of just 10,000 bonus points after spending $1,000 on purchases in the first 90 days after approval for the card. The JetBlue Plus Card* boosts the welcome offer to 50,000 bonus points after spending $1,000 on purchases and paying the annual fee in full, both within the first 90 days, pushing the full amount you have to spend to $1,099.

One JetBlue point is worth about 1.2 cents, so the JetBlue Plus Card* will earn you an extra $600 worth of points in exchange for its $99 annual fee, making it the clear winner here.

Annual Fee

The JetBlue Card* has $0 annual fee, so it may be a good choice for people who are looking for a card they don’t have to pay to use.

The JetBlue Plus Card*’s annual fee is reasonable at $99. The fee isn’t waived in the first year, but the larger welcome bonus and other perks make the fee well worth it for JetBlue loyalists.

Earning Rewards

Both the JetBlue Card* and JetBlue Plus Card* are quite similar in terms of earning rewards through spending. Both cards offer 1 TrueBlue point per dollar spent on most purchases and 2 points per dollar spent on restaurant and grocery store purchases.

Where they differ is in how they reward travel spending. The JetBlue Card* offers 3 points per dollar spent on eligible JetBlue purchases, while the JetBlue Plus Card* doubles that to 6 points per dollar spent.

Using a value of 1.2 cents per TrueBlue point, you would have to spend $1,375 on JetBlue travel alone each year to cover the annual fee of the Plus version with the elevated earnings.

Considering the annual fee, if your focus is on how much you can earn by using the card, the no-annual-fee version beats the Plus version. However, the other perks the JetBlue Plus Card* offers make it much easier to get your money’s worth.

Benefits

Perks and benefits are where the two cards begin to diverge significantly. Both cards let you earn your way toward JetBlue Mosaic status through purchases and offer a 50% discount on inflight purchases. That pretty much sums up the perks that the JetBlue Card* offers, but the JetBlue Plus Card* goes much further.

To start, JetBlue Plus offers a 5,000-point bonus after your account anniversary each year. At 1.2 cents per point, that’s equivalent to about $60, which covers more than half of the card’s annual fee.

You’ll also get a redemption bonus. Each time you use points to book travel on a JetBlue-operated award flight, you’ll get 10% of those points back, giving you a headstart on your next redemption.

JetBlue Plus Card* members also get a free checked bag for themselves and up to three companions on the same reservation. The first checked bag costs $35 on most economy fares, meaning you can save up to $70 round trip or up to $280 for a family of four.

Finally, you can get a $100 statement credit once each calendar year when you use your JetBlue Plus Card* to book a JetBlue Vacations package that costs $100 or more.

Given the wide variety and the value of the extras offered by the JetBlue Plus Card*, it’s the clear winner in this category—if you’ll use them.

Redemption Options

Cardholders of both versions can redeem their points for flights on any JetBlue flight with no seat restrictions or blackout dates. You can even redeem JetBlue points on other airlines. JetBlue also offers vacation packages, which include flights, hotels and car rentals. You can redeem points for those packages as well.

If you don’t have enough points to pay for a flight, JetBlue offers Cash + Points fares, which let you redeem as few as 500 points toward a flight or vacation package and pay cash to cover the difference.

JetBlue Plus Card* holders also have the option to redeem points for a statement credit on non-travel purchases. Redemptions can only be made to help cover statements of $25 or more, and cardholders can only redeem up to $1,000 in statement credits per year. Points are worth 0.75 cents when redeemed for a statement credit.

Transfer Partners

JetBlue works with a number of travel partners but does not offer direct point transfers to those partner rewards programs. Instead, you can earn TrueBlue points when flying on one of JetBlue’s partner airlines or redeem points for tickets on select partner flights.

You can earn TrueBlue points when flying on:

  • Hawaiian Airlines
  • Icelandair
  • JSX
  • Qatar Airways
  • Silver Airways
  • Singapore Airlines
  • South African Airways

You can redeem your TrueBlue points for flights with:

  • Hawaiian Airlines
  • Qatar Airways

Fees and APR

Other than the annual fee, both cards charge identical APRs and fees. Cardholders will pay 21.24% - 29.99% variable APR for any balance they carry on either card. Only JetBlue Plus Card* will pay an annual fee, which totals $99.

Consider Neither the JetBlue Card Nor JetBlue Plus For

Travel on Other Airlines

JetBlue’s credit cards offer the most value to people who are loyal to JetBlue and use the airline for most of their travel. To make the most of either card, but especially the JetBlue Plus Card*, you’ll need to fly on JetBlue at least a couple of times each year.

If you’re more flexible with your choice of airline, another card that offers more generic travel rewards, such as the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card, might be a better choice. This card has strong earnings at 5 points per dollar on travel purchased through Chase Travel℠, 3 points per dollar on dining, select streaming services, and online grocery purchases (excluding Walmart, Target and wholesale clubs), 2 points per dollar on all other travel purchases and 1 point per dollar on other purchases. Ultimate Rewards points can transfer to over a dozen airline and hotel partners, making it a much more versatile option.

Everyday Purchases

Both the JetBlue Card* and JetBlue Plus Card* offer just 1 point per dollar spent on purchases outside of the bonus categories. A TrueBlue point is worth about 1.2 cents each, so a typical cash-back credit card that offers 1.5% or 2% cash back on all purchases will offer more value.

If you’re looking for a card to use on everyday purchases, consider the Chase Freedom Unlimited®, which offers 5% cash back on travel purchased through Chase Travel℠, 3% cash back on eligible dining and drugstores and 1.5% on all other purchases, plus an additional 1.5% cash back on the first $20,000 in purchases the first year and pairs well with Chase’s travel cards. Or you could consider the Citi Double Cash® Card, which offers 2% cash back on all purchases—1% when purchases are made and another 1% when they’re paid off.

Bottom Line

If you fly JetBlue with any regularity and want to pick up a co-branded card, the JetBlue Plus Card* is the clear winner. While it does carry an annual fee of $99, the card’s anniversary bonus makes up for more than half of that. The 10% rebate when you redeem points, free checked bags, and higher earning rate when booking flights make it easy for JetBlue loyalists to realize value from the card.
