Front Seat Belt Replacement

Special Tools Required

KTC trim tool set SOJATP2014 *

SRS components are located in this area. Review theSRS component locations and theprecautions and procedures beforedoing repairs or service.

NOTE:

  • Use the appropriate tool from the KTC trim tool set toavoid damage when prying components.
  • Take care not to tear the seams or damage the seatcovers.
  • Put on gloves to protect your hands. Check the frontseat belts for damage, and replacethem if necessary. Be careful not to damage themduring removal and installation.

Front Seat Belt

1. Make sure you have the anti-theft code for theaudio and navigation system (if equipped), thenwrite down the XM audio presets (if equipped).

2. Disconnect the negative cable from the battery, andwait at least 3 minutes before beginning work.

3. Slide the front seat forward fully.

4. Carefully pry up on the bottom edge of the anchorcover (A) to release the hooks, and remove thecover.

5. Remove the lower anchor bolt (A).

6. Remove the B-pillar lower trim panel.

7. Remove the upper anchor cover (A), and removethe upper anchor bolt (B).

8. Disconnect the seat belt tensioner connector (A)from the retractor (B). Remove the upper retractormounting bolt (C) and the lower retractor bolt (D),then remove the front seat belt (E) and retractor.

9. Remove the B-pillar upper trim (see step 4).

10. Remove the shoulder anchor adjuster (A).

11. Install the seat belt in the reverse order of removal,and note these items:

  • Apply liquid thread lock to the anchor boltsbefore reinstallation.
  • Tighten the bolts by hand first, then tighten to thespecified torque.
  • Check that the retractor locking mechanism functions.
  • Assemble the washers, collar, and bushing on the upper and lower anchor bolts as shown.
  • If the seat belt tensioner has been deployed,replace the B-pillar lower seal with a new one.
  • Before installing the anchor bolts, make surethere are no twists or kinks in the seat belt.
  • Make sure the seat belt tensioner connector andthe seat belt buckle tensioner connector areplugged in properly.
  • Reconnect the negative cable to the battery.
  • Enter the anti-theft codes for the audio andnavigation system (if equipped), then enter theXM audio presets (if equipped).
  • Set the clock (without navigation system).

    Check for any DTCs that may have been setduring repairs, and clear them.

Seat Belt Buckle

1. Make sure you have the anti-theft code for theaudio and navigation system (if equipped), thenwrite down the XM audio presets (if equipped).

2. Disconnect the negative cable from the battery, andwait at least 3 minutes before beginning work.

3. Remove the front seat.

4. Passenger's seat for some models: Remove thecenter table.

5. Remove the recline inner cover (see step 5).

6. Disconnect the seat subharness connector (A).

Detach the seat belt buckle tensioner connector (B)and harness clip (C).

7. Remove the center anchor bolt (A), and remove theseat belt buckle (B).

8. Pull the seat belt switch/tensioner harness (C) outthrough the space between the seat cushion andthe seat linkage (driver's seat), or the hole in theseat track (passenger's seat).

9. Install the buckle in the reverse order of removal,and note these items:

  • Assemble the washers on the center anchor boltas shown.
  • Apply liquid thread lock to the anchor bolt beforereinstallation.
  • Tighten the bolt by hand first, then tighten to thespecification with a torque wrench.
  • Apply liquid thread lock to the seat mountingbolts before reinstallation.
  • Reconnect the negative cable to the battery.
  • Enter the anti-theft codes for the audio andnavigation system (if equipped), then enter theXM audio presets (if equipped).
  • Set the clock (without navigation system).
  • Check for any DTCs that may have been setduring repairs, and clear them.
  • Do the power window control unit resetprocedure.

Rear Seat Belt Replacement

NOTE: Check the rear seat belts for damage, andreplace them if necessary. Be careful not to damagethem during removal and installation.

Rear Seat Belt

1. Fold the rear seat up.

2. Remove the cargo area side trim panel.

3. Pull the carpet back as necessary, and remove thelower anchor bolt (A).

4. Remove the upper anchor cap (A), and remove theupper anchor bolt (B).

5. Remove the retractor mounting self-tapping screw(A), and the retractor bolt (B), then remove the rearseat belt (C) and retractor (D).

6. Install the seat belt in the reverse order of removal,and note these items:

  • Assemble the washers, collar, and bushing onthe upper anchor bolt as shown.
  • Check that the retractor locking mechanismfunctions as described.
  • Apply liquid thread lock to the anchor boltsbefore reinstallation.
  • Tighten the bolts by hand first, then tighten to thespecified torque.
  • Before installing the anchor bolts, make surethere are no twists or kinks in the seat belt.

Rear Center Seat Belt

NOTE: Take care not to tear the seams or damage theheadliner.

1. Remove the cap (A) from the retractor cover (B).

2. Remove the headliner.

3. Remove the retractor mounting bolt (A) andretractor anchor bolts (B), then remove the centerseat belt (C) and retractor (D).

4. If necessary, replace the retractor cover (see step9).

5. Install the center seat belt and retractor in thereverse order of removal, and note these items:

  • Check that the retractor locking mechanismfunctions.
  • Apply liquid thread lock to the retractor anchorbolt before reinstallation.

Rear Center Seat Belt Detachable Anchorand Right Rear Seat Belt Buckle

1. Remove the rear seat.

2. Remove the undercover from the rear seat.

3. Remove the center anchor bolts (A) from under theseat cushion.

4. Pull the rear center seat belt detachable anchor (A)and right rear seat belt buckle (B) out.

5. Install the anchor and buckle in the reverse order ofremoval, and note these items:

  • Assemble the washer on the center anchor boltas shown.
  • Apply liquid thread lock to the anchor boltsbefore reinstallation.
  • Make sure there are no twists or kinks in theanchor, center belt, and seat belt buckle.

Rear Center Seat Belt Buckle and Left RearSeat Belt Buckle

1. Fold the rear seat up (one side).

2. Remove the outer cover, right rear seat, left rear seat.

3. Remove the center anchor bolt (A).

4. Pull the rear center seat belt buckle (A) (right rearseat) or left rear seat belt buckle (left rear seat) out.

5. Install the buckle in the reverse order of removal,and note these items:

  • Assemble the collar and washer on the centeranchor bolt as shown.
  • Apply liquid thread lock to the anchor bolt beforereinstallation.
  • Make sure there are no twists or kinks in the seatbelt buckle.

Inspection

For a front seat belt retractor with a seat belt tensioner,review the SRS component locations and the precautions and procedures before doing repairs or service.

Retractor

1. Before installing the retractor, check that the seatbelt can be pulled out freely.

2. Make sure that the seat belt does not lock when theretractor (A) is leaned slowly up to 15 º from themounted position. The seat belt should lock whenthe retractor is leaned over 40º. Do not attempt todisassemble the retractor.

3. Replace the seat belt with a new assembly if thereis any abnormality. Do not disassemble any part ofthe seat belt for any reason.

In-vehicle

1. Check that the seat belt is not twisted or caught onanything.

2. After installing the anchors, check for freemovement on the anchor bolts. If necessary,.ren'1ove the anchor bolts and check that thewashers and other parts are not damaged orimproperly installed.

3. Check the seat belts for damage or discoloration.

Clean with a shop towel if necessary. Use onlysoap and water to clean.

NOTE: Dirt buildup in the loops of the upperanchors can cause the seat belts to retract slowly.

Wipe the inside of the loops with a clean clothdampened in isopropyl alcohol.

4. Check that the seat belt does not lock when pulledout slowly. The seat belt is designed to lock onlyduring a sudden stop or impact.

5. Make sure that the seat belt will retractautomatically when released.

6. For front and rear passenger's seat belts, check theseat belt retractor locking mechanism ALR(automatic locking retractor). This function is forsecuring child seats:

  1. Pull the seat belt all the way out to engage theALR. The seat belt should retract with a soft,ratcheting sound, but not extend. This isnormal.
  2. To disengage the ALR, release the seat belt andallow it to fully retract, then pull the seat beltout part-way. The seat belt should retract andextend normally.

7. Replace the seat belt with a new assembly if thereis any abnormality. Do not disassemble any part ofthe seat belt for any reason.
