What is the main point of John 15? ›

On the final evening of His mortal ministry, after the Last Supper, the Savior taught His Apostles that He is the True Vine and that His disciples are the branches. He commanded His disciples to love one another and warned them of the persecution they would experience because of their association with Him.

This message explains that we need to remain constantly connected to Christ. As a branch needs to be connected to the main part of the plant in order to live, we need to be “attached” to the Lord.

Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me.” In this passage, Jesus is using a metaphor to explain that just as a branch cannot produce fruit on its own, we cannot accomplish anything meaningful in our lives without a connection to Christ. Without Him, we cannot bear fruit or live a fruitful life.

Jesus' role as the vine is twice identified, in verse 1 as “the true vine” and in verse 5 as “the vine.” This is the life source of the branches. It is God who tends to the flourishing of the branches, and likewise will “remove[s] every branch” (John 15:2) that gives no yield.

The greatest spiritual benefit of Israel, of course, is Jesus – which Jesus himself acknowledged when he said, “I am the true vine” (John 15:1). The whole vineyard is used to represent Israel as a nation, whilst the vine itself represents the people.

Perhaps most of all, we live in a world that is grounded in myths of unlimited growth. With his image of the vine and branches, Jesus is calling us away from all that, to a different kind of identity, relationship, and vocation. He is calling us back to God, whose way is love in truth and action.

Against this background, Jesus speaks of Himself as the true vine, the One who will bear good fruit to His Father's approval and glory. Now we understand a bit more about our verse at hand. Jesus is the vine, the true source of life for us believers.

ABIDING IN JESUS IS A COMMITMENT

When we abide in Jesus, we are no longer living for ourselves, we are living to glorify God and serve others. When we abide in Jesus, His commands and teachings will shape all that we do! Jesus does not want us to be wishy-washy, or to call on Him only when we need something.

What can we learn from John 15 13? ›

Christ's statement in John 15:13 demonstrates His boundless love for us. Jesus literally laid down His own life for His friends, those who obey Him (verse 14). He exhibited the most remarkable display of love when He died for our sins, showing what true, selfless love looks like.

A good vinedresser cuts out those dead, fruitless branches and destroys them. The analogy Jesus presents here is not about loss of salvation, which is impossible. Rather, His message is about those who "put on" an appearance of faith, but are disconnected from the True Vine that gives eternal life.

The vine exists to nourish, feed, and grow the branches, the branches exist to bear the fruit of the vine. No one would ever approach a vineyard and make a distinction between a vine and the branches. When we look at a vineyard we recognize it is as just that, a place where the vine grows.

According to our text, John 15:7, if we are to become what God wants us to be in our praying, we must let the words of Jesus abide in us. “If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it shall be done for you.” The words of Jesus must abide in us if our prayers are to be effective.
