Moss saw minimal work on the Broncos' defense during his rookie campaign, tallying six total tackles while playing just 23 defensive snaps through 14 games. JUNE 4 • ASSOCIATED PRESS Marvin Mims Jr. - Feels better in second offseason Mims said things are going "a lot smoother" for him in his second NFL offseason, Nick Kosmider of The Athletic reports.Impact In addition to having a much better understanding of Sean Payton's offense, Mims mentioned that he's "as healthy as I've been in a long time." The 2023 second-round pick was limited by hamstring injuries last spring and summer, though that didn't stop him from having a big impact early in the season, including four receptions of 38 or more yards and a kick return TD within the first four weeks. While Mims remained effective on special teams apart from a pair of lost fumbles, he had only 135 receiving yards on 22 targets in his 12 appearances after Week 4. The NFL's new kickoff rules figure to make Mims even more important for Denver's special teams this year, and he should also be part of a competition for the No. 2 receiver job opposite Courtland Sutton. If not Mims, it'll likely be Josh Reynolds, Troy Franklin or Tim Patrick (Achilles) stepping up as the No. 2 receiver, though a rotation also is possible. MAY 31 • ROTOWIRE Riley Moss - Dealing with back injury Moss was unavailable for practice Thursday due to a back injury, Zac Stevens of TheDNVR.com reports.Impact Moss apparently "tweaked" something in his back at practice earlier in the week, according to head coach Sean Payton, but the cornerback is expected to be back in action at some point during next week's OTAs. Entering his second season in the NFL, Moss will compete with the likes of Damarri Mathis and Ja'Quan McMillian for reps behind primary cornerbacks Patrick Surtain and Levi Wallace in 2024. MAY 30 • ROTOWIRE Audric Estime - Undergoes knee scope Estime underwent a small scope on his knee last week, but he is expected to be ready for training camp, Troy Renck of Denver 7 News reports.Impact Estime is expected to rehab his knee, so he will not be present at OTAs or mandatory minicamp in June. At 5-foot-11, 221 pounds, the Broncos' fifth round pick of this year's draft is projected to bring a physical style to the running back room. Assuming his health is back up to par by training camp, he will presumably be competing with the likes of Samaje Perine, Jaleel McLaughlin, Tyler Badie and Blake Watson for a depth role behind Javonte Williams in this year's backfield. Downing of the Marietta Daily Journal reports.Impact McLaughlin played all 17 games for the Broncos in 2023 after going undrafted out of Youngstown State last spring, averaging 5.4 yards on 76 carries and 5.2 yards on 31 receptions. He seems to be healthy after suffering a head injury Week 18, but that doesn't necessarily mean he'll have a role in Denver's crowded backfield in 2024. The team still has Javonte Williams and Samaje Perine under contract and recently brought in fifth-round pick Audric Estime and undrafted free agent Blake Watson. Listed at 5-foot-7 and 187 pounds, McLaughlin is the smallest of the bunch, though perhaps the quickest. MAY 29 • ROTOWIRE Samaje Perine - Potential cap casualty Perine is competing for a role in Denver's backfield but could end up being a cap casualty if the Broncos are satisfied with their reserve options behind starter Javonte Williams,...Impact Perine has a non-guaranteed $3 million salary for the second season of his two-year contract. That's a reasonable number for someone who offers good pass protection and reliable hands while also playing special teams, but the Broncos could nonetheless cut or trade Perine if they feel comfortable with Jaleel McLaughlin, Blake Watson or Tyler Badie as a passing-down specialist. None of those other backs can match Perine for size, blocking or experience, but they would probably have an edge over him in terms of speed and quickness. Meanwhile, Williams and fifth-round pick Audric Estime are more likely to get playing time on early downs.
